点 — diǎn

1. to touch briefly; to tap; to mark with a dot; to check off (on a list)

   老师点了我的名字。 lǎoshī diǎn le wǒ de míngzì — The teacher called my name during roll call.

2. to order (food etc.); to select

   我们去点几道菜吧。 wǒmen qù diǎn jǐdàocài ba — Let's go order a few dishes.

3. to mention; to bring up (a topic or person); to hint at; to imply

   别在会上点他——会很尴尬的。 bié zài huìshàng diǎn tā huì hěn gāngà de — Don't bring him up at the meeting — it'll be awkward.

4. to administer (eye medicine etc.) in drops

   医生要你每天早晚各点两滴眼药水。 yīshēng yào nǐ měitiān zǎowǎn gè diǎn liǎngdī yǎnyàoshuǐ — The doctor wants you to put two drops of eye medicine morning and night.

5. to light (a fire, a lamp etc.); to ignite

   他用打火机点了篝火。 tāyòng dǎhuǒjī diǎn le gōuhuǒ — He lit the bonfire with a lighter.

6. to nod (one's head) in agreement; to beckon by moving one's hand up and down; to point

   他朝我点了点头表示同意。 tā cháo wǒ diǎn le diǎntóu biǎoshìtóngyì — He nodded to me to show agreement.

7. point; dot; spot; speck; dot stroke in Chinese characters; (math.) decimal point

   这个数字小数点后有两位。 zhège shùzì xiǎoshùdiǎn hòu yǒu liǎngwèi — This number has two digits after the decimal point.

8. point in time or space; (after a number) o'clock; a small amount; a bit; (after a verb or adjective) a bit more

   现在是三点。 xiànzài shì sāndiǎn — It's three o'clock now.

9. classifier for small amounts

   请给我一点儿糖。 qǐng gěi wǒ yìdiǎnér táng — Please give me a little sugar.
