炮 — pào

   那座古代城墙上还保留着几门旧炮。 nà zuò gǔdài chéngqiáng shàng hái bǎoliú zhe jǐmén jiù pào — There are still several old cannons preserved on that ancient city wall.

2. firecracker; (also general term for explosive firework)

   过年时孩子们在院子里放炮，很热闹。 guònián shí háizi men zài yuànzi lǐ fàngpào hěn rènào — During the New Year the children set off firecrackers in the yard; it's lively.

炮 — bāo

1. to sauté; to fry; to dry by heating

   先把洋葱用油炮一下，直到变软再加其他配料。 xiān bǎ yángcōng yòngyóu pào yīxià zhídào biànruǎn zàijiā qítā pèiliào — First sauté the onions in oil until they soften, then add the other ingredients.

炮 — páo

1. to prepare herbal medicine by roasting or parching (in a pan)

   这味药需要先用小火把草药炮过再入汤。 zhè wèi yào xūyào xiānyòng xiǎo huǒbǎ cǎoyào pào guò zàirù tāng — This medicine needs the herbs to be roasted lightly before being made into the decoction.
