炒 — chǎo

1. to sauté; to stir-fry

   用大火把菜快速地炒熟。 yòng dà huǒbǎ cài kuàisù dì chǎoshú — Use high heat to quickly stir-fry the vegetables.

2. to speculate (in real estate, stocks, etc.)

   他们在市中心炒房几年，赚了不少钱。 tāmen zài shìzhōngxīn chǎo fáng jǐnián zhuàn le bùshǎo qián — They speculated on city center property for years and made a lot of money.

3. to scalp (buy and resell quickly for profit)

   有人在演唱会门票上市后立刻炒票牟利。 yǒurén zài yǎnchànghuì ménpiào shàngshì hòu lìkè chǎo piào móulì — Some people scalped tickets for the concert as soon as they hit the market to make a profit.

4. to hype up; to promote energetically (sometimes artificially)

   这家公司靠炒作产品吸引了大量关注。 zhèjiā gōngsī kào chǎozuò chǎnpǐn xīyǐn le dàliàng guānzhù — That company attracted a lot of attention by hyping up its product.

5. to sack; to dismiss from a job (colloquial)

   听说他因为犯错被老板炒了。 tīngshuō tā yīnwèi fàncuò bèi lǎobǎn chǎo le — I heard he was sacked by the boss for making a mistake.

6. to fire (someone) (more formal synonym: sack/dismiss)

   公司因财务问题不得不炒掉几名员工。 gōngsī yīn cáiwù wèntí bùdé bù chǎo diào jǐmíng yuángōng — The company had to fire several employees because of financial problems.
