灰 — huī

1. ash; residue left after burning

   火堆烧完只剩下一些灰。 huǒduī shāo wán zhǐ shèngxià yīxiē huī — After the fire burned out there was only some ash left.

2. lime (calcium oxide) or quicklime

   建筑工地上堆着几袋生灰用来抹墙。 jiànzhùgōngdì shàng duī zhe jǐdài shēng huī yònglái mòqiáng — There are several bags of quicklime at the construction site used for plastering walls.

3. gray; grey (the color)

   她喜欢穿灰色的外套。 tā xǐhuān chuān huīsè de wàitào — She likes to wear a gray coat.

4. discouraged; dejected; downcast
