灭 — miè

1. to extinguish; to put out (a fire, light, etc.)

   消防员迅速把火灭掉了。 xiāofángyuán xùnsù bǎ huǒ mièdiào le — The firefighters quickly put out the fire.

2. to go out (of a fire, light); to be extinguished

   当晚风一大，蜡烛就灭了。 dàngwǎn fēng yīdà làzhú jiù miè le — When the wind picked up, the candle went out.

3. to exterminate; to wipe out (people, a species, an enemy)

   那次战争几乎将整个村庄的人口灭绝。 nàcì zhànzhēng jīhū jiāng zhěnggè cūnzhuāng de rénkǒu mièjué — That war almost wiped out the entire village population.

4. to drown (to cause to die by drowning)

   他担心如果不及时跳下水，那个人就会被灭顶在河里。 tā dānxīn rúguǒ bùjí shí tiào xiàshuǐ nàge rén jiù huì bèi mièdǐng zài hélǐ — He worried that if he didn't jump in the water in time, the person would drown in the river.
