澄清 — chéngqīng

1. clear, limpid (of a liquid)

   湖水很澄清，可以看到底部。 húshuǐ hěn chéngqīng kěyǐ kàndào dǐbù — The lake water is very clear; you can see the bottom.

2. to clarify; to make something clear (explain facts, remove misunderstanding)

   公司发表声明澄清了有关财务的误解。 gōngsī fābiǎoshēngmíng chéngqīng le yǒuguān cáiwù de wùjiě — The company issued a statement to clarify the misunderstandings about its finances.

澄清 — dèngqīng

1. to settle (of a liquid); to become clear by precipitation of impurities (chemistry)

   把茶叶静置一会儿，茶汤会澄清。 bǎ cháyè jìngzhì yīhuìer chátāng huì chéngqīng — Let the tea leaves stand for a while and the infusion will settle and become clear.

2. to put in order; to settle or resolve (a dispute, confusion); to quell disturbances

   政府出面澄清局势，防止事态扩大。 zhèngfǔ chūmiàn chéngqīng júshì fángzhǐ shìtài kuòdà — The government stepped in to restore order and prevent the situation from escalating.
