1. to remain in a place (of people who cannot leave); to be stranded

   由于大雪，很多旅客滞留在机场。 yóuyú dàxuě hěnduō lǚkè zhìliú zài jīchǎng — Due to heavy snow, many passengers were stranded at the airport.

2. to remain or linger (of something that would typically dissipate, e.g. floodwater, pollutants)

   化学物质在土壤中滞留，影响了地下水质量。 huàxuéwùzhì zài tǔrǎng zhōng zhìliú yǐngxiǎng le dìxiàshuǐ zhìliàng — Chemicals remained in the soil, affecting groundwater quality.
