滋生 — zīshēng

1. to breed; to flourish; to proliferate

   湿润的环境容易滋生细菌。 shīrùn de huánjìng róngyì zīshēng xìjūn — A damp environment easily breeds bacteria.

2. to cause; to provoke; to give rise to (usually something undesirable)

   腐败问题会滋生更多社会矛盾。 fǔbàiwèntí huì zīshēng gèngduō shèhuì máodùn — Corruption issues will provoke more social conflicts.

3. to create; to give rise to (more generally)

   不当言论可能滋生仇恨和误解。 bùdàng yánlùn kěnéng zīshēng chóuhèn hé wùjiě — Inappropriate remarks can create hatred and misunderstanding.
