溜 — liū

1. to slip away; to sneak off; to escape stealthily (often 溜走)

   他趁老师不注意溜出教室。 tā chèn lǎoshī bù zhùyì liūchū jiàoshì — He slipped out of the classroom while the teacher wasn't paying attention.

2. to skate (溜冰)

   周末我们去溜冰场溜冰吧。 zhōumò wǒmen qù liūbīngchǎng liūbīng ba — Let's go skate at the rink this weekend.

溜 — liù

1. swift current; rapids

   这条河在山谷中有许多急溜，航行危险。 zhètiáo hé zài shāngǔ zhōng yǒu xǔduō jí liū hángxíng wēixiǎn — This river has many rapids in the valley; navigation is dangerous.

2. skilled; proficient; (of movements) quick; speedy

   他做事很溜，效率很高。 tā zuòshì hěn liū xiàolǜ hěn gāo — He's very skillful at what he does; very efficient.

3. rain runoff from a roof; roof gutter (bound form)

   屋檐溜下来的水被排到下水道里。 wūyán liùxiàlái de shuǐ bèi páidào xiàshuǐdào lǐ — The water running off the eaves is channeled into the drain.

4. classifier for rows, lines etc

   一溜同学走进了礼堂。 yīliū tóngxué zǒujìn le lǐtáng — A line of students walked into the auditorium.

5. surroundings; neighborhood

   他在这儿混了好几年，熟悉这溜的情况。 tā zài zhèér hùn le hǎojǐnián shúxī zhè liū de qíngkuàng — He's been around here for years and knows the neighborhood well.

6. (dialect) to practice; to plaster; to fill in cracks (with cement or lime plaster)

   老工人说要把墙缝溜一下再刷漆。 lǎogōngrén shuō yào bǎ qiángfèng liū yīxià zài shuāqī — The old worker said to fill the wall cracks before painting.
