淹没 — yānmò

1. to submerge (put under water)

   他把玻璃瓶完全淹没在水里。 tā bǎ bōlípíng wánquán yānmò zài shuǐlǐ — He completely submerged the glass bottle in water.

2. to drown (a person or animal)

   不幸的是，那名潜水员在事故中被淹没而丧生。 bùxìng de shì nà míng qiánshuǐyuán zài shìgù zhōng bèi yānmò ér sàngshēng — Unfortunately, the diver drowned and died in the accident.

3. to flood; to inundate (land, area)

   连续降雨导致河水上涨，许多农田被淹没了。 liánxù jiàngyǔ dǎozhì héshuǐ shàngzhǎng xǔduō nóngtián bèi yānmò le — Continuous rain caused the river to rise; many fields were flooded.

4. to drown out (figurative: to overwhelm or obscure something)

   新政策的消息很快就淹没了之前的讨论。 xīn zhèngcè de xiāoxī hěnkuài jiù yānmò le zhīqián de tǎolùn — News of the new policy quickly drowned out the earlier discussion.
