淡 — dàn

1. insipid; bland; tasteless (of food)

   这汤太淡了，要不要加点盐？ zhè tāng tài dàn le yào bùyào jiādiǎn yán — This soup is too bland — should we add some salt?

2. diluted; weak (concentration, strength of a solution or drink)

   咖啡太淡了，下次泡浓一点。 kāfēi tài dàn le xiàcì pào nóng yìdiǎn — The coffee is too weak; brew it stronger next time.

3. light in color; pale

   她喜欢穿淡色的衣服，看起来很温柔。 tā xǐhuān chuān dànsè de yīfú kànqǐlái hěn wēnróu — She likes wearing light-colored clothes; she looks gentle.

4. indifferent; lukewarm; unemotional (attitude or response)

   他对我的建议反应很淡，似乎不太在意。 tā duì wǒ de jiànyì fǎnyìng hěndàn sìhū bù tài zàiyì — He reacted coolly to my suggestion; he doesn't seem to care much.

5. mild; moderate (degree, flavor, sensation)

   这种药的副作用比较淡，不会太强烈。 zhèzhǒng yào de fùzuòyòng bǐjiào dàn búhuì tài qiángliè — This medicine's side effects are relatively mild; they won't be too strong.
