1. to wash (rice, sand etc. in water to remove impurities); to rinse

   吃饭前要淘一淘米。 chīfàn qián yào táo yī táomǐ — You should rinse the rice before cooking.

2. to dredge; to scoop out (sediment, waste)

   工人们正在河道里淘淤泥。 gōngrén men zhèngzài hédào lǐ táo yūní — Workers are dredging silt from the river channel.

3. (dialect) to hunt for and buy bargains or second-hand goods

   她喜欢去旧货市场淘东西。 tā xǐhuān qù jiùhuò shìchǎng táo dōngxī — She likes to hunt for bargains at the flea market.

4. (dialect) naughty; mischievous

   这孩子很淘，总是捣乱。 zhè háizi hěn táo zǒngshì dǎoluàn — This child is very naughty and always causes trouble.
