淋 — lín

1. to sprinkle; to drizzle; to let liquid fall in drops

   雨一直淋在窗台上。 yǔ yìzhí lín zài chuāngtáishàng — Rain kept dripping onto the windowsill.

2. to pour (a liquid over someone or something)

   他把水淋在孩子身上帮他降温。 tā bǎ shuǐ lín zài háizi shēnshàng bāng tā jiàngwēn — He poured water over the child to help cool him down.

3. to drench; to soak thoroughly

   他被大雨淋得全身湿透。 tā bèi dàyǔlín dé quánshēn shītòu — He was drenched by the heavy rain.

淋 — lìn

1. to filter; to strain; to drain (liquid through a sieve or filter)

   做汤的时候要把油淋掉再上桌。 zuò tāng de shíhòu yào bǎ yóu lín diào zài shàngzhuō — When making soup, you should drain off the oil before serving.

2. gonorrhea (an infectious disease)

   他被确诊为淋病，需要及时治疗。 tā bèi quèzhěn wèi lìnbìng xūyào jíshí zhìliáo — He was diagnosed with gonorrhea and needs prompt treatment.

3. strangury (in traditional Chinese medicine: painful, difficult urination)

   中医书中把这种症状称为淋。 zhōng yīshū zhōng bǎ zhèzhǒng zhèngzhuàng chēngwéi lín — In TCM texts this symptom is called 'lin' (strangury).
