1. to wear down; to sap; to whittle away (gradually reduce strength, resources, resolve)

   长期的争吵最终消磨了他们的感情。 chángqī de zhēngchǎo zuìzhōng xiāomó le tāmen de gǎnqíng — Long-term arguing eventually wore down their feelings.

2. to while away; to idle away (pass time in a pleasant or unimportant way)

   他在公园里消磨了整个下午。 tā zài gōngyuán lǐ xiāomó le zhěnggè xiàwǔ — He whiled away the entire afternoon in the park.
