1. to put an end to; to annihilate; to cause to perish

2. to perish; annihilation (as a process, e.g. in physics or extinction)

   在粒子物理学中，正负电子会相互消灭并释放能量。 zài lìzi wùlǐxué zhōng zhèngfùdiànzi huì xiānghù xiāomiè bìng shìfàng néngliàng — In particle physics, electrons and positrons annihilate each other and release energy.
