1. to apply (paint etc); to smear; to daub; to scribble; to scrawl

   我把油漆涂在墙上。 wǒ bǎ yóuqī tú zài qiángshàng — I painted (applied paint) on the wall.

2. (literary) mud; also used in old texts to mean 'street' or 'road'

   大雨之后，泥涂遍地，行人难走。 dàyǔ zhīhòu ní tú biàndì xíngrén nán zǒu — After the heavy rain, mud covered the ground and walking was difficult.
