流失 — liúshī

1. to be washed away; to be eroded (of soil, riverbanks, etc.)

   河岸长期被冲刷流失，危险性越来越大。 héàn chángqī bèi chōngshuā liúshī wēixiǎnxìng yuèláiyuè dà — The riverbank has been eroded for a long time and the danger is increasing.

2. to flow away elsewhere; to be lost/not retained (fig.) — e.g. talent, followers, funds leaving

   公司因为待遇低而导致人才流失严重。 gōngsī yīnwèi dàiyù dī ér dǎozhì réncáiliúshī yánzhòng — The company has serious talent loss because of low pay.
