洗 — xǐ

1. to wash (clothes, dishes, body)

   我今天早上洗了澡。 wǒ jīntiān zǎoshàng xǐ le zǎo — I took a bath this morning.

2. to wash (clothes) / do the laundry

   她每周洗两次衣服。 tā měizhōu xǐ liǎngcì yīfú — She washes clothes twice a week.

3. to develop (photographs)

   她把底片拿去洗了。 tā bǎ dǐpiàn ná qù xǐ le — She took the film to be developed.

4. to shuffle (cards etc.)

   他在洗牌之前把牌打乱了。 tā zài xǐpái zhīqián bǎ pái dǎluàn le — He shuffled the cards before dealing.

5. to erase (a recording)

   他不小心把录音洗掉了。 tā bùxiǎo xīn bǎ lùyīn xǐdiào le — He accidentally erased the recording.

洗 — xiǎn

1. used only in the compound 洗马 (xian3 ma3) — historical/ceremonial washing of a horse

   古代君臣有时举行洗马的仪式。 gǔdài jūnchén yǒushí jǔxíng xǐ mǎ de yíshì — In ancient times officials sometimes held a ceremony of washing horses.
