注 — zhù

1. to pour into; to flow into; to inject (liquid, light, etc.)

   河水注入了湖中。 héshuǐ zhùrù le húzhōng — The river flows into the lake.

2. to concentrate; to focus (one's spirit, gaze, attention) on a single point

   他把注意力全都注在研究上。 tā bǎ zhùyìlì quándōu zhù zài yánjiū shàng — He concentrated all his attention on the research.

3. stake; bet; (classifier) unit for bets, sums of money, transactions or beams of light

   他下了一注五十块钱。 tā xià le yī zhù wǔshíkuài qián — He placed a bet of fifty yuan.

4. to annotate; to provide explanatory notes on a written text; an annotation (note)

   老师要求我们在课本上用不同的颜色注出重点。 lǎoshī yāoqiú wǒmen zài kèběnshàng yòng bùtóng de yánsè zhù chū zhòngdiǎn — The teacher asked us to mark the key points in the textbook with different colors.

5. to put on record; to register

   请把这笔款项注在账本上。 qǐng bǎ zhèbǐ kuǎnxiàng zhù zài zhàngběn shàng — Please record this sum of money in the ledger.
