治 — zhì

1. to rule; to govern; to administer

   古人讲究以德治国。 gǔrén jiǎngjiū yǐ dézhìguó — The ancients valued governing the state with virtue.

2. to manage; to control; to handle (a situation or object)

   他擅长治家，把日子安排得井井有条。 tā shàncháng zhìjiā bǎ rìzi ānpái dé jǐngjǐngyǒutiáo — He is good at managing the household and arranges life in good order.

3. to harness or control (a river, flood, etc.)

   工程师们正在研究如何治这条河防止泛滥。 gōngchéngshī men zhèngzài yánjiū rúhézhì zhètiáo hé fángzhǐ fànlàn — Engineers are studying how to control this river to prevent flooding.

4. to treat (a disease); to cure

   他去医院治感冒了。 tā qù yīyuàn zhìgǎnmào le — He went to the hospital to treat his cold.

5. to wipe out; to exterminate (pests)

   政府采取措施治鼠患。 zhèngfǔ cǎiqǔcuòshī zhì shǔ huàn — The government took measures to eliminate the rat infestation.

6. to punish; to put in order (by punishment)

   朝廷严厉治贪官污吏。 cháotíng yánlì zhì tānguānwūlì — The court severely punished corrupt officials.

7. to research; to study (rare/archaic usage)

   他一生治学严谨，著述颇丰。 tā yīshēng zhìxuéyánjǐn zhùshù pǒfēng — He pursued scholarly research rigorously throughout his life and wrote extensively.
