油 — yóu

1. oil (generic liquid used for cooking, lubrication, fuel)

   厨房里没有油了，得去买一瓶。 chúfáng lǐ méiyǒu yóu le dé qù mǎi yīpíng — There's no oil in the kitchen; I need to go buy a bottle.

2. fat (as a food component)

   这块肉的油很多，吃起来很香。 zhèkuài ròu de yóu hěnduō chī qǐlái hěn xiāng — This piece of meat has a lot of fat and tastes rich.

3. grease (lubricant for machinery)

   需要在轴上加一点油以防生锈。 xūyào zài zhóu shàng jiāyìdiǎn yóu yǐfáng shēngxiù — You need to add some grease to the axle to prevent rust.

4. petroleum; oil (crude oil, fossil fuel)

   该国的经济严重依赖石油和天然气等油资源。 gāiguó de jīngjì yánzhòng yīlài shíyóu hé tiānránqì děng yóu zīyuán — The country's economy heavily depends on oil and natural gas resources.

5. to apply tung oil, paint, varnish or similar finish

   这张木桌需要在表面涂油以保护它。 zhè zhāng mùzhuō xūyào zài biǎomiàn túyóu yǐ bǎohù tā — This wooden table needs to be oiled on the surface to protect it.

6. oily (having or covered with oil)

   他的手总是很油，因为他常常做饭。 tā de shǒu zǒngshì hěn yóu yīnwèi tā chángcháng zuòfàn — His hands are always oily because he cooks often.

7. greasy (covered with or producing grease; also figurative)

   那家店的炸鸡吃起来太油了，很腻。 nàjiā diàn de zhàjī chī qǐlái tàiyóu le hěn nì — The fried chicken at that shop is too greasy and cloying.

8. glib (smooth or insincerely flattering)

   他说话很油，经常让人觉得不可信。 tā shuōhuà hěn yóu jīngcháng ràng rén juéde bùkě xìn — He speaks very glibly; people often find him untrustworthy.

9. cunning; slick (having an insincere, crafty manner)

   别被他的油嘴滑舌骗了，他很会算计人。 bié bèi tā de yóuzuǐhuáshé piàn le tā hěn huì suànjì rén — Don't be fooled by his slick talk; he's very calculating.
