比试 — bǐshì

1. to have a competition; to compete

   两队在操场上比试武术。 liǎngduì zài cāochǎngshàng bǐshì wǔshù — The two teams competed in martial arts on the playground.

2. to measure with one's hand or arm (e.g., to compare length by holding arms out)

   他们比试看谁的臂长。 tāmen bǐshì kàn shéi de bìzhǎng — They measured to see whose arm was longer.

3. to make a gesture of measuring; to pantomime measuring

   他用手比试看衣服的长度。 tāyòng shǒu bǐshì kàn yīfú de chángdù — He made a measuring gesture with his hand to check the length of the clothes.
