母 — mǔ

1. mother

   她是我的母亲。 tā shì wǒ de mǔqīn — She is my mother.

2. elderly female relative (old woman in the family / matron)

   家里的老母很受大家尊敬。 jiālǐ de lǎomǔ hěn shòu dàjiā zūnjìng — The elderly matron of the family is much respected.

3. origin; source

   水是生命之母。 shuǐ shì shēngmìng zhī mǔ — Water is the mother (source) of life.

4. (of animals) female

   那头母牛正在吃草。 nà tóu mǔniú zhèngzài chī cǎo — That cow (female) is eating grass.

   故乡被称为万物之母。 gùxiāng bèi chēngwéi wànwù zhī mǔ — The homeland is called the mother of all things.
