1. to destroy; to spoil; to ruin; to injure

   洪水把庄稼全都残坏了。 hóngshuǐ bǎ zhuāngjià quándōu cán huài le — The flood ruined all the crops.

2. cruel; oppressive; savage; brutal

   那个监狱的看守对犯人很残酷。 nàge jiānyù de kānshǒu duì fànrén hěn cánkù — The prison guards were very cruel to the prisoners.

3. incomplete; defective; disabled (physically)

   那台机器因零件残缺而无法运转。 nà tái jīqì yīn língjiàn cánquē ér wúfǎ yùnzhuàn — That machine cannot work because some parts are missing.

4. remnant; surplus; to remain; to survive

   节后商店里还有一些残货打折出售。 jiéhòu shāngdiàn lǐ háiyǒu yīxiē cánhuò dǎzhé chūshòu — After the holiday there are still some leftover goods on sale at a discount.
