死 — sǐ

1. to die; to pass away

   他昨天晚上死了。 tā zuótiānwǎnshàng sǐ le — He died last night.

2. impassable; uncrossable; a dead end

   山路被雪堵住了，变成了死路。 shānlù bèi xuě dǔzhù le biànchéng le sǐlù — The mountain road was blocked by snow and became impassable.

3. inflexible; rigid; stubborn

   他的想法很死，不能接受别人的建议。 tā de xiǎngfǎ hěn sǐ bùnéng jiēshòu biérén de jiànyì — His thinking is very rigid; he can't accept others' suggestions.

4. extremely; (intensifier) - used after adjectives/verbs

   今天热死了！ jīntiān rè sǐ le — It's extremely hot today!

5. damned; used before nouns as an insulting intensifier (colloquial)

   那死小偷被抓住了。 nà sǐ xiǎotōu bèi zhuāzhù le — That damned little thief was caught.
