步 — bù

1. a step; a pace

   他迈出了一大步。 tā màichū le yīdàbù — He took a big step.

2. to walk; to march

   他缓缓地步出了大门。 tā huǎnhuǎn dìbù chū le dàmén — He slowly walked out of the gate.

3. stages in a process; a phase

   项目还在第一步，需要更多时间。 xiàngmù hái zài dìyībù xūyào gèngduō shíjiān — The project is still in the first stage and needs more time.

4. situation; condition (often used after numerals/words to indicate degree)

   事情发展到这一步，已经很难改变了。 shìqíng fāzhǎn dào zhè yībù yǐjīng hěn nán gǎibiàn le — Now that things have reached this point, it's hard to change.

5. surname Bu

   步先生来自北方。 bù xiānshēng láizì běifāng — Mr. Bu comes from the north.
