1. to stop; to halt

   他止住脚步，回头看了看。 tā zhǐzhù jiǎobù huítóu kàn le kàn — He stopped walking and looked back.

2. to prohibit; to forbid (formal/literary)

   法律明文止贩毒。 fǎlǜ míngwén zhǐ fàndú — The law expressly prohibits drug trafficking.

3. until; up to (indicating an endpoint)

   报名时间到本月底止。 bàomíng shíjiān dào běnyuèdǐ zhǐ — Registration is open until the end of this month.

4. only; merely (classical/literary usage)

   参赛者止此十人。 cānsàizhě zhǐ cǐ shí rén — The contestants are only these ten people.
