歇 — xiē

1. to rest; to take a break

   我们先歇一会儿，再继续干活。 wǒmen xiān xiē yīhuìer zài jìxù gànhuó — Let's rest for a while first, then continue working.

2. to stop; to halt (an action or process)

   会议上他的话突然歇了，大家都安静下来。 huìyì shàng tā dehuà tūrán xiē le dàjiā dōu ānjìngxiàlái — His speech suddenly stopped during the meeting, and everyone fell quiet.

3. (dialect) to sleep

   天黑了，咱们早点歇吧。 tiānhēi le zánmen zǎodiǎn xiē ba — It's getting dark; let's turn in early.

4. a moment; a short while

   等我歇一歇就好，你先去吧。 děng wǒ xiē yī xiē jiù hǎo nǐ xiānqù ba — Wait a moment while I rest a little, you go ahead.
