次 — cì

1. next; second (in order)

   下次我们改天再见。 xiàcì wǒmen gǎitiān zàijiàn — Next time we'll meet another day.

2. classifier for enumerated events: (times); used after a verb or numeral

   我去过三次北京。 wǒ qùguò sāncì běijīng — I have been to Beijing three times.

3. secondary; vice- (as a prefix indicating rank beneath another)

   次要问题我们稍后再讨论。 cìyào wèntí wǒmen shāohòu zài tǎolùn — We will discuss secondary issues later.

4. inferior; substandard; of lower quality

   那批货品质次，不可接受。 nà pīhuò pǐnzhì cì bùkě jiēshòu — That batch of goods is of poor quality and unacceptable.

5. order; sequence; rank (in a series)

   请按次序排队。 qǐng àn cìxù páiduì — Please line up in order.

6. hypo- (chemistry); a scientific prefix meaning 'under' or 'less than'

   游泳池里加了一点次氯酸钠来消毒。 yóuyǒngchí lǐjiā le yìdiǎn cìlǜsuānnà lái xiāodú — A bit of sodium hypochlorite was added to the pool for disinfection.
