桩 — zhuāng

1. stump; (wood) stake; pile (of wood or earth)

   树桩还留在院子里，没被挖掉。 shùzhuāng hái liúzài yuànzi lǐ méi bèi wādiào — The tree stump is still in the yard; it hasn't been dug out.

2. stake driven into the ground; piling (as in construction)

   工人把几根桩打进软土里作为地基。 gōngrén bǎ jǐgēn zhuāng dǎjìn ruǎntǔ lǐ zuòwéi dìjī — The workers drove several piles into the soft soil to serve as the foundation.

3. classifier for events, cases, transactions, affairs (e.g. 一桩案子, 一桩买卖)

   最近发生了一桩离奇的盗窃案。 zuìjìn fāshēng le yīzhuāng líqí de dàoqièàn — A strange theft case occurred recently.
