栽 — zāi

1. to plant (e.g., seedlings)

   他在后院栽了一棵苹果树。 tā zài hòuyuàn zāi le yīkē píngguǒshù — He planted an apple tree in the backyard.

2. to grow (make grow)

   他花了几年时间把花园栽得很茂盛。 tā huā le jǐnián shíjiān bǎ huāyuán zāi dé hěn màoshèng — He spent years making the garden grow lush.

3. to insert; to stick in

   把钥匙栽到锁眼里再转动。 bǎ yàoshi zāidào suǒ yǎnlǐ zài zhuǎndòng — Insert the key into the keyhole and then turn.

4. to erect (e.g., a sign, post)

   市政部门在路口栽了一个新的公交站牌。 shìzhèng bùmén zài lùkǒu zāi le yígè xīn de gōngjiāozhàn pái — The municipal department erected a new bus stop sign at the intersection.

5. to impose something on somebody; to frame/pin on (blame)

   他觉得自己被栽了冤枉，决定上诉。 tā juéde zìjǐ bèi zāi le yuānwǎng juédìng shàngsù — He felt he had been framed and decided to appeal.

6. to stumble

   他一脚踩空，差点栽了。 tā yījiǎo cǎi kōng chàdiǎn zāi le — He missed a step and almost fell.

7. to fall down

   他在台阶上栽了个跟头，手肘擦破了。 tā zài táijiē shàng zāi le gè gēntou shǒuzhǒu cāpò le — He took a tumble on the steps and scraped his elbow.
