   院子里那棵树长得很高。 yuànzi lǐ nà kē shù zhǎng dé hěn gāo — That tree in the yard has grown very tall.

2. to cultivate (plants, esp. trees); to plant trees

   他们在山坡上栽树以防止水土流失。 tāmen zài shānpō shàng zāishù yǐ fángzhǐ shuǐtǔliúshī — They plant trees on the hillside to prevent soil erosion.

3. to set up; to establish (often in compounds: 树立, 树起)

   村民们在村口树起了一面旗帜。 cūnmín men zài cūnkǒu shùqǐ le yímiàn qízhì — The villagers set up a flag at the village entrance.
