暗 — àn

1. dark; lacking light

   房间很暗，我们开灯吧。 fángjiān hěnàn wǒmen kāidēng ba — The room is very dark; let's turn on the light.

2. to grow dark; to get dark (sky, evening)

   天色快暗了，我们回家吧。 tiānsè kuài àn le wǒmen huíjiāba — It's getting dark soon; let's go home.

3. secret; hidden; covert

   他有很多暗房交易。 tā yǒu hěnduō ànfáng jiāoyì — He has many secret/off-the-books deals.

4. (literary) confused; ignorant

   他生性暗于世务，难以处理复杂事情。 tā shēngxìng àn yúshìwù nányǐ chǔlǐ fùzá shìqíng — He is naturally ignorant of worldly affairs and has difficulty handling complex matters.

5. (literary) to close (a door); to shut

   夜深时分，他轻轻暗了房门。 yèshēn shífēn tā qīngqīng àn le fángmén — Late at night, he gently closed the door.

6. (literary) to eclipse; to obscure

   云彩暗了天空，雨快要来了。 yúncǎi àn le tiānkōng yǔ kuàiyào lái le — The clouds darkened the sky; rain is about to come.

7. confused; ignorant (variant/literary)

   他对世事还很暗，需要长辈指点。 tā duì shìshì hái hěnàn xūyào zhǎngbèi zhǐdiǎn — He is still ignorant about worldly affairs and needs guidance from elders.

8. dark (variant of 暗)

   窗外的景色显得有些暗。 chuāngwài de jǐngsè xiǎnde yǒuxiē àn — The view outside the window looks somewhat dark.
