无缘 — wúyuán

1. to have no opportunity; to have no chance (of doing something)

   他考试发挥失常，这次升学可以说是无缘了。 tā kǎoshì fāhuī shīcháng zhècì shēngxué kěyǐ shuō shì wúyuán le — He performed poorly on the exam; this time he really has no chance of advancing.

2. to have no connection/relationship (with someone or something)

   这件事和我无缘，请不要再找我帮忙了。 zhèjiàn shì hé wǒ wúyuán qǐng búyào zài zhǎo wǒ bāngmáng le — This matter has nothing to do with me; please don't ask me for help anymore.

3. to fail to place (in a competition); to be eliminated/lose out

   他们队在半决赛输掉了，最后无缘决赛。 tāmen duì zài bànjuésài shūdiào le zuìhòu wúyuán juésài — Their team lost in the semifinals and ultimately failed to reach the final.

4. literary/pop-lyric use: no chance of love; destined not to be together

   歌词里唱到我们无缘，听着真让人心酸。 gēcí lǐ chàngdào wǒmen wúyuán tīng zhe zhēnràngrén xīnsuān — The lyrics say we're not meant to be; it sounds really heartbreaking.
