断 — duàn

1. to break; to snap

   风太大，把树枝吹断了。 fēng tàidà bǎ shùzhī chuī duàn le — The wind was too strong and snapped the branch.

2. to cut off; to sever; to interrupt

   暴风雨把电线断了，整个村子停电。 bàofēngyǔ bǎ diànxiàn duàn le zhěnggè cūnzi tíngdiàn — The storm cut the power line and the whole village lost electricity.

3. to give up or abstain from something

   医生劝他断酒，保护肝脏。 yīshēng quàn tā duàn jiǔ bǎohù gānzàng — The doctor advised him to give up alcohol to protect his liver.

4. to judge; to decide; to determine

   法官断定被告无罪。 fǎguān duàndìng bèigào wúzuì — The judge ruled the defendant not guilty.

5. (usu. used in the negative) absolutely; definitely; decidedly

   这事我断不会同意。 zhèshì wǒ duàn búhuì tóngyì — I definitely will not agree to this.
