敢 — gǎn

1. to dare; to have the courage to do something

   他不敢一个人去那个地方。 tā bùgǎn yígè rén qù nàge dìfāng — He doesn't dare go to that place alone.

2. daring; bold (describing a person or action)

   她的打扮很敢，大家都注意到她了。 tā de dǎbàn hěngǎn dàjiā dōu zhùyì dào tā le — Her outfit is very daring; everyone noticed her.

3. (polite) may I venture; used to introduce a question or request modestly

   敢问一下，您什么时候方便？ gǎn wèn yīxià nín shénme shíhòu fāngbiàn — May I ask, when are you available?
