教训 — jiàoxun

1. to admonish; to scold; to lecture somebody

   老师把他叫到办公室教训了一顿。 lǎoshī bǎ tā jiào dào bàngōngshì jiàoxùn le yīdùn — The teacher called him into the office and gave him a talking-to.

2. a bitter lesson; a reprimand; moral or practical lesson learned from failure or mistake

   这次失败给了我们一个深刻的教训。 zhècì shībài gěi le wǒmen yígè shēnkè de jiàoxùn — This failure taught us a hard lesson.
