放水 — fàngshuǐ

1. to turn on the water (e.g. a tap); to run water

   洗手盆有点脏，你先去放水冲一下。 xǐshǒupén yǒudiǎn zàng nǐ xiānqù fàngshuǐ chōng yīxià — The sink is a bit dirty; go turn on the water and rinse it first.

2. to let water out (e.g. drain a reservoir, release water from a sluice)

   暴雨后，他们不得不放水，防止堤坝决口。 bàoyǔ hòu tāmen bùdé bùfàng shuǐ fángzhǐ dībà juékǒu — After the heavy rain they had to release water to prevent the dam from bursting.

3. (sports) to throw a game; to intentionally lose

   有人怀疑这场比赛队员故意放水以换取更好的签位。 yǒurén huáiyí zhèchǎng bǐsài duìyuán gùyì fàngshuǐ yǐ huànqǔ gènghǎo de qiān wèi — Some people suspect the team intentionally threw the match to get a better draft position.
