收敛 — shōuliǎn

1. to dwindle; to disappear; to make something disappear

   随着时间推移，湖水逐渐收敛，露出了湖底。 suízhe shíjiāntuīyí húshuǐ zhújiàn shōuliǎn lùchū le húdǐ — Over time the lake's water dwindled, revealing the lake bed.

2. to exercise restraint; to curb (one's mirth, arrogance, etc.)

   他听到批评后，马上收敛了自己的言辞。 tā tīngdào pīpíng hòu mǎshàng shōuliǎn le zìjǐ de yáncí — After hearing the criticism, he immediately restrained his words.

3. to astringe (cause tissues to contract)

   这种草药有收敛作用，可用于止血。 zhèzhòng cǎoyào yǒu shōuliǎn zuòyòng kě yòngyú zhǐxuè — This herb has an astringent effect and can be used to stop bleeding.

4. (math.) to converge

   当变量趋于无穷时，序列开始收敛到一个固定值。 dāng biànliàng qūyú wúqióng shí xùliè kāishǐ shōuliǎn dào yígè gùdìngzhí — As the variable tends to infinity, the sequence begins to converge to a fixed value.
