攀 — pān

1. to climb (by pulling oneself up)

   他用手攀上了岩壁，最后成功了。 tāyòng shǒu pānshàng le yánbì zuìhòu chénggōng le — He pulled himself up the rock face and finally succeeded.

2. to implicate (in a crime or scandal)

   他被人错误地攀上了那桩贪污案，正在澄清事实。 tā bèi rén cuòwù dì pānshàng le nà zhuāng tānwūàn zhèngzài chéngqīngshìshí — He was wrongly implicated in that embezzlement case and is clarifying the facts.

3. to claim or seek connections with people of higher status (to get favors)

   他上任后常常攀关系，希望把项目拿到手。 tā shàngrèn hòu chángcháng pān guānxì xīwàng bǎ xiàngmù nádào shǒu — After taking office he often cultivated connections, hoping to secure the project.
