撑 — chēng

1. to support; to prop up (physically hold something up)

   他用木棍撑住了门。 tāyòng mùgùn chēngzhù le mén — He propped the door open with a wooden stick.

2. to move, push or pole along (e.g., push a boat with a pole)

   船夫用长篙在水里撑着前进。 chuánfū yòng zhǎng gāo zài shuǐlǐ chēng zhe qiánjìn — The boatman pushed the boat forward with a long pole.

3. to maintain or keep (a state, condition, or argument); to hold on

   他坚持用这个理由来撑自己的观点。 tā jiānchí yòng zhège lǐyóu lái chēng zìjǐ de guāndiǎn — He keeps using that reason to support his point of view.

4. to open or unfurl (e.g., open an umbrella, spread a sail)

   外面下雨了，她赶紧把伞撑开。 wàimiàn xiàyǔ le tā gǎnjǐn bǎ sǎn chēngkāi — It started raining outside, she quickly opened her umbrella.

5. to be full to bursting; to stuff oneself (eat until full)

   我们吃了很多，肚子都撑了。 wǒmen chī le hěnduō dǔzi dōu chēng le — We ate a lot; our stomachs are stuffed.
