揽 — lǎn

1. to monopolize; to corner (a market, resource, etc.)

   那家公司揽下了本地区大部分的工程项目。 nàjiā gōngsī lǎn xià le běn dìqū dàbùfèn de gōngchéngxiàngmù — That company monopolized most of the construction projects in the area.

2. to seize; to grab (suddenly take hold of)

   小偷试图揽住逃跑的包，但没有成功。 xiǎotōu shìtú lǎnzhù táopǎo de bāo dàn méiyǒu chénggōng — The thief tried to grab the running bag but failed.

3. to take into one's arms; to hold

   孩子哭了，妈妈把他揽在怀里安慰。 háizi kū le māmā bǎ tā lǎn zài huáilǐ ānwèi — The child cried, and the mother held him in her arms to comfort him.

4. to embrace (figurative); to include or take in

   这项政策揽括了教育和医疗两大领域的改革措施。 zhèxiàng zhèngcè lǎn kuò le jiàoyù hé yīliáo liǎng dà lǐngyù de gǎigé cuòshī — This policy embraces reform measures in both education and healthcare.

5. to fasten (with a rope, cord, etc.)

   工人把绳子揽在桩子上，确保不会松开。 gōngrén bǎ shéngzi lǎn zài zhuāngzi shàng quèbǎo búhuì sōngkāi — The workers fastened the rope to the post to make sure it wouldn't come loose.

6. to take on (responsibility, tasks); to undertake

   他揽下了这个项目的全部管理工作。 tā lǎn xià le zhège xiàngmù dì quánbù guǎnlǐgōngzuò — He took on all the management work for this project.

7. to canvass; to solicit (votes, support, orders)

   志愿者上门揽订报纸订阅和募捐支持。 zhìyuànzhě shàngmén lǎn dìng bàozhǐ dìngyuè hé mùjuān zhīchí — Volunteers went door to door canvassing for newspaper subscriptions and donations.
