1. to break off / break open something with one's hands (literally pull apart)

   他用手把面包掰成两半。 tāyòng shǒubǎ miànbāo bāi chéng liǎngbàn — He tore the bread in two with his hands.

2. (figurative) to break off a relationship / to split up

   他们俩昨天掰了，已经不再说话。 tāmen liǎ zuótiān bāi le yǐjīng bùzài shuōhuà — They broke up yesterday and no longer speak.
