推 — tuī

1. to push (physically)

   他用力把门推开。 tā yònglì bǎmén tuīkāi — He pushed the door open with force.

2. to cut (archaic/less common meaning)

   工匠以利刃推竹，分作数片。 gōngjiàng yǐ lìrèn tuī zhú fēnzuò shùpiàn — The craftsman cut the bamboo with a sharp blade, splitting it into several pieces. (archaic)

3. to refuse; to reject; to decline

   我只好婉言推了那份邀请。 wǒ zhǐhǎo wǎnyán tuī le nàfèn yāoqǐng — I had to politely decline that invitation.

4. to shirk (responsibility)

   他总想把工作推给别人，不愿意负责。 tā zǒngxiǎng bǎ gōngzuò tuīgěi biérén bù yuànyì fùzé — He always tries to push the work onto others, unwilling to take responsibility.

5. to put off; to delay; to postpone

   会议被推到下周举行。 huìyì bèi tuīdào xiàzhōu jǔxíng — The meeting was pushed back to next week.

6. to push forward; to promote; to nominate; to elect

   委员会推选他为新一任主席。 wěiyuánhuì tuīxuǎn tā wèi xīnyīrèn zhǔxí — The committee nominated him as the new chairman.

7. to massage; to rub (therapeutically)

   医生建议晚上用药膏推患处以减轻疼痛。 yīshēng jiànyì wǎnshàng yòng yàogāo tuī huànchǔ yǐ jiǎnqīng téngtòng — The doctor recommended massaging the ointment into the sore area at night to ease the pain.
