接 — jiē

1. to receive (something delivered); to pick up

   我去邮局接了一个包裹。 wǒ qù yóujú jiē le yígè bāoguǒ — I went to the post office to pick up a package.

2. to answer (the phone)

   他不在家，没人接电话。 tā bùzài jiā méirénjiē diànhuà — He's not home; no one is answering the phone.

3. to meet or welcome someone (e.g., at station or airport)

   我们去机场接他。 wǒmen qù jīchǎng jiē tā — We'll go to the airport to meet him.

4. to connect; to link (physical or abstract)

   把两根电线接起来。 bǎ liǎnggēn diànxiàn jiē qǐlái — Connect the two wires together.

5. to catch (e.g., a ball); to receive by catching

   快，把球接住！ kuài bǎ qiú jiēzhù — Quick, catch the ball!

6. to join; to attach (two parts together)

   工人把两根管子接在一起。 gōngrén bǎ liǎnggēn guǎnzi jiēzài yìqǐ — The workers joined the two pipes together.

7. to extend (reach or continuation)

   公路接到了村里。 gōnglù jiēdào le cūnlǐ — The road was extended into the village.

8. to take one's turn on duty; to relieve (someone)

   护士交接班时，下一位护士来接班了。 hùshì jiāojiēbān shí xià yīwèi hùshì lái jiēbān le — When the nurses changed shifts, the next nurse came to take over duty.

9. to take over for someone; to assume (responsibility)

   经理出差了，我去接管他的工作。 jīnglǐ chūchāi le wǒ qù jiēguǎn tā de gōngzuò — The manager is on a business trip; I'll take over his work.
