1. to explore; to investigate (an area)

   他们去山区探资源。 tāmen qù shānqū tàn zīyuán — They went to the mountains to explore resources.

2. to search out; to look into (information or facts)

   警方正在探案情的细节。 jǐngfāng zhèngzài tàn ànqíng de xìjié — The police are investigating the details of the case.

3. to scout (e.g., reconnoitre for information or location)

   他派人去前方探路。 tā pài rén qù qiánfāng tànlù — He sent people ahead to scout the route.

4. to visit (briefly, e.g., visit someone)

   周末我去探望奶奶。 zhōumò wǒ qù tànwàng nǎinǎi — I'll visit Grandma this weekend.

5. to stretch forward; to reach out (physically)

   他探手去抓桌上的杯子。 tā tàn shǒu qù zhuā zhuōshàng de bēizi — He reached out his hand to grab the cup on the table.
