排 — pái

1. a row; a line

   请排成一排。 qǐng páichéng yīpái — Please form a line.

2. to set in order; to arrange; to line up

   他把书排在书架上。 tā bǎ shū páizài shūjiàshàng — He arranged the books on the shelf.

3. to eliminate; to get rid of (an obstacle, rival, etc.)

   裁判把违反规则的选手排除出局。 cáipàn bǎ wéifǎn guīzé de xuǎnshǒu páichú chūjú — The referee eliminated the player who broke the rules.

4. to drain; to remove liquid

   把水排掉再放入新的水。 bǎ shuǐ páidiào zài fàngrù xīn de shuǐ — Drain the water before putting in fresh water.

5. to push open

   他把门排开让大家进来。 tā bǎmén páikāi ràng dàjiā jìnlái — He pushed the door open to let everyone in.

6. platoon (military unit)

   这个连有三个排。 zhège liányǒu sāngè pái — This company has three platoons.

7. raft (a loose bundle tied together)

   他们用木头排做了一只简陋的筏子。 tāmen yòng mùtou pái zuò le yīzhī jiǎnlòu de fázi — They made a crude raft from logs tied together.

8. classifier for lines, rows, files; (used for rows of objects)

   请排两排椅子。 qǐng pái liǎngpái yǐzi — Please arrange two rows of chairs.
