1. to grasp; to seize; to get hold of (often figurative)

   他很快就掌握了这个新概念。 tā hěnkuài jiù zhǎngwò le zhège xīn gàiniàn — He quickly grasped this new concept.

2. to control; to take charge of; to seize (initiative, opportunity, destiny)

   政府必须掌握经济运行的主动权。 zhèngfǔ bìxū zhǎngwò jīngjìyùnxíng de zhǔdòngquán — The government must seize control of the initiative in economic operation.

3. to master; to know well and be able to use (a skill, subject); fluency

   她掌握了三门外语，能流利地交流。 tā zhǎngwò le sānmén wàiyǔ néng liúlìdì jiāoliú — She has mastered three foreign languages and can communicate fluently.
