掉 — diào

1. to fall; to drop

   水果从树上掉下来了。 shuǐguǒ cóng shùshàng diàoxiàlái le — The fruit fell from the tree.

2. to lag behind; to fall back

   他跑得慢，掉在队伍后面了。 tā pǎodémàn diào zài duìwǔ hòumiàn le — He ran slowly and fell behind the group.

3. to lose; to go missing (something is gone)

   我把钥匙掉了，不知道放哪儿了。 wǒ bǎ yàoshi diào le bùzhī dào fàng nǎér le — I lost my keys; I don't know where I put them.

4. to reduce; to fall (in price); to lose (value, weight etc.)

   苹果这周价格又掉了。 píngguǒ zhèzhōu jiàgé yòu diào le — Apple prices dropped again this week.

5. to wag; to swing; to sway

   他转身把头一掉，就走开了。 tā zhuǎnshēn bǎtóu yī diào jiù zǒukāi le — He turned his head away and walked off.

6. to turn; to change; to exchange; to swap

   把这两个位置掉一下，看看更合适不合适。 bǎ zhè liǎnggè wèizhì diào yīxià kànkàn gèng héshì bùhé shì — Swap these two positions to see if it's more suitable.

7. to show off

   他喜欢在朋友面前掉文，显得很有学问。 tā xǐhuān zài péngyǒu miànqián diào wén xiǎnde hěn yǒu xuéwèn — He likes to show off his learning in front of friends to look erudite.

8. to shed (hair)

   换季时猫会掉很多毛。 huànjì shí māo huì diào hěnduō máo — Cats shed a lot of fur during season changes.

9. (resultative complement) used after verbs to indicate completion, removal or realization

   他把剩下的菜全吃掉了。 tā bǎ shèngxià de cài quán chīdiào le — He ate up all the leftover food.
