挽 — wǎn

1. to pull; to draw (e.g., a cart or a bow)

   他用力挽着马车把它拉走。 tā yònglì wǎnzhe mǎchē bǎ tā lāzǒu — He pulled hard on the cart and drew it away.

2. to roll up; to coil (e.g., hair, fabric)

   她把头发挽成一个发髻。 tā bǎ tóufā wǎn chéng yígè fàjì — She rolled her hair into a bun.

3. to carry on the arm (hold something on one's arm)

   她挽着孩子的手臂走进房间。 tā wǎnzhe háizi de shǒubì zǒujìn fángjiān — She walked into the room holding the child's arm.

4. to lament the dead; to mourn

   古代的人们常在丧礼上挽歌为死者挽辞。 gǔdài de rénmen cháng zài sānglǐ shàng wǎngē wèi sǐzhě wǎncí — In ancient times people often sang laments at funerals to mourn the dead.

5. (figurative) to pull against; to try to oppose or resist

   大家都想挽住这家百年老店，不让它倒闭。 dàjiā dōu xiǎng wǎnzhù zhèjiā bǎinián lǎodiàn bùràng tā dǎobì — Everyone wants to save this century-old shop from going under.

6. to recover (e.g., to pull something back into a good state)

   公司经过调整后慢慢挽回了损失。 gōngsī jīngguò tiáozhěng hòu mànmàn wǎnhuí le sǔnshī — After adjustments the company slowly recovered its losses.
